Frequently Asked Questions

This FAQ covers common questions about made-to-measure kilts, ties, repairs, alterations, shipping, and how Ault Kilts works. If you can't find the answer you're looking for, please contact us.

Ordering & Products

Do you offer made-to-measure kilts?

Yes. All kilts are made to order based on the measurements, tartan, fabric, and design options you select. Each kilt is individually made rather than taken from stock.

How do I provide my measurements?

You can use our size guide or have your measurements taken by a professional tailor. Where measurements are supplied by you, whether taken personally or by a third party, you accept full responsibility for their accuracy.

What if my kilt doesn't fit?

If a fit issue arises from incorrect measurements supplied by you, any alterations may be offered at an additional cost, including postage. If there is an error in our workmanship or we have not followed the agreed specification, we will work with you to put it right.

Can I return a made-to-measure kilt?

Because made-to-measure kilts are personalised items made to your specifications, they are non-returnable and non-refundable except where they are faulty or not made in accordance with the agreed specification. Your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (as applied in Scotland) are not affected.

Do you sell ties and accessories?

Yes. We offer a curated range of ties and accessories designed to work with Highland dress and everyday wear. Availability may change over time.

Repairs & Alterations

What types of repairs do you offer?

We offer a range of repair and alteration services, including minor kilt repairs, small hole repairs, medium damage restoration, structural repairs, strap and buckle replacement, belt resizing, shortening, and other sympathetic restoration work. We assess each garment individually and advise on the most suitable repair tier.

Can you work on older or heavily damaged kilts?

Yes. We regularly work on vintage and heirloom kilts, including those with moth damage or structural issues. However, very old or weakened fabrics may have limitations, and repairs may not restore the garment to "as new" condition. We will explain what is realistically possible before work proceeds.

Do garments need to be cleaned before repair?

Yes. Garments must be supplied in a clean, hygienic condition. Items must be free from bodily fluids, strong odours, mould, infestations, or heavy pet hair. We reserve the right to refuse work, return a garment unworked, or apply additional charges if it arrives in an unsafe or unhygienic condition. Postage and inspection fees are non-refundable in such cases.

Can I cancel repair or alteration work?

Once repair or alteration work has begun, services cannot be cancelled and charges remain payable. If you wish to cancel before work starts, please contact us as soon as possible; an assessment or handling fee may still apply.

Shipping & Liability

How do I send my kilt to you for repair?

You are responsible for arranging and paying for inbound shipping of your garment to Ault Kilts. We strongly recommend using a tracked and, where appropriate, insured courier service. Please keep your proof of postage and tracking number.

Who is responsible if my item is lost or damaged in transit?

For inbound shipping (from you to Ault Kilts), risk of loss or damage remains with you until the garment has been received by us. For return shipping (from Ault Kilts back to you), risk transfers to you once the parcel has been handed to the courier. All claims for loss, delay, or damage in transit must be made directly with the courier unless insurance has been arranged. Ault Kilts is responsible for your garment only while it is in our possession.

Do you offer prepaid return shipping?

Yes. Where available, you can purchase a return shipping option through our shop. In that case we arrange courier collection from our premises on your behalf. This does not change the allocation of risk: once the parcel is handed to the courier, responsibility for loss or damage passes to you.

Do you ship outside the UK?

At present, our services and shipping are limited to the United Kingdom. If this changes in future, we will update the information on our website.

Lead Times & Turnaround

How long does a made-to-measure kilt take?

Lead times can vary depending on fabric availability, mill schedules, and workshop capacity. As a general guide, made-to-measure kilts often take between six and twelve weeks. We will provide an estimated timescale when you order, but this is not a guaranteed delivery date.

How long do repairs and alterations take?

Repair turnaround depends on the type and extent of work:

  • Minor repairs: typically 1–2 weeks
  • Medium repairs: typically 2–4 weeks
  • Major or structural repairs: 4–8 weeks or longer

These timeframes are estimates and may be affected by workload, seasonal demand, and the condition of the garment.

Payment & Returns

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept major debit and credit cards and, where offered on the website, selected third-party payment providers such as PayPal or instalment and "buy now, pay later" services. Availability of specific payment options may change over time.

Can I return ties or accessories?

Standard, non-customised accessories may be returnable in line with our Returns Policy, provided they are unworn, in resaleable condition, and within the stated timeframe. Please refer to the Returns Policy page for full details.

Legal & General

Are my consumer rights affected?

Nothing in our Terms & Conditions or this FAQ affects your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and other applicable consumer protection legislation as applied in Scotland.

What law applies to Ault Kilts?

Aultkilts LTD operates under Scots law. Any disputes arising out of orders, services, or use of the website are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Scottish courts.
